Carlisle in Cumbria is situated just a mile south of the line of Hadrian's Wall and is the ideal place to begin your exploration of Roman Cumbria and the northern frontier of Hadrian’s Wall. As the site of the important town of Luguvalium and housing two military garrisons, Carlisle has a wealth of archaeological material and a rich Roman heritage.
