Phalera baldric fitting

A circular mount with Jupiter's eagle with outstretched wings at the centre. The eagle was a popular motif and can be found on all types of military equipment. The inscription surrounding the mount reads "OPTIME MAXIME CON- (Jupiter) Best (and) Greatest protect (us)". This mount was one of the most elaborate types of openwork fitting and would have been worn as part of a set, on a soldier's cross strap. It dates form the 3rd Century AD.
