Samian dish

Large Samian ware dish. Red slip-coated Samian ware was produced in Gaul and exported across the empire. Although potters in Britain tried to replicate this popular style, they never achieved the finish produced by the Gaulish centres. Samian ware was commonly used by the army and is therefore commonly found in military contexts; it was however also used by some civilians too. Although common, there are many examples of samian being carefully repaired, suggesting that it was an important commodity. This dish would have been used to hold any number of types of food.
